Transportation Program

For decades, transportation has accounted for about one-fourth of total U.S. energy use, two-thirds of total oil consumption, and over half of the air pollution in our nation. New transportation technologies are expanding rapidly with the intent to improve the efficiency and emissions of vehicles using petroleum-based fuels, provide cleaner-burning alternative fuels, and reduce the nation's travel miles.

SECO's Transportation Program focuses on reducing fuel consumption, air pollution and traffic congestion. Projects include fuel-safe school buses, traffic signal synchronization, intelligent traffic management systems and Texas/Mexico colonias vanpools and telehealth programs. Local partners (governmental units, hospitals, school districts, and not-for-profit providers) maintain, dispatch and operate the equipment for the vanpools and telehealth programs, and each year these vans cover more than one million passenger miles.
